About Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap was founded to address a need we experienced firsthand: navigating the overwhelming mental health landscape when a loved one is struggling. We saw how difficult it can be to take that first step, especially when resources are hard to find or confusing to navigate.

Our goal is to connect individuals and families to trustworthy, local organizations that provide mental health support, while also highlighting health and wellness resources to build confidence, community, and resilience. The good news: Charlotte has a lot of incredible resources to help. Whether you’re seeking immediate help or looking to foster long-term wellbeing, Mind the Gap is here to guide you.

Brooks and Norty Turner, founders of Mind the Gap

Meet the Founders

Brooks & Norty Turner

We founded Mind the Gap after supporting loved ones through their own mental health journeys. In 2018, after our oldest daughter was diagnosed with a chronic mental health condition, we felt alone, worried and overwhelmed. All of the different therapy styles and industry acronyms were just so confusing. And figuring out how to pay for help and navigate insurance was/is an ongoing battle.

Ultimately, we found that knowledge was power and also provided comfort. Also, we soon realized that sharing our experience with others helped us feel less isolated and connected us to trusted resources from those who had already walked in our shoes. What we have learned over the last 7 years inspired us to create Mind the Gap, a mental health resource guide for those in our community who may be suffering.

We believe that everyone deserves a path to connection, healing and hope. By providing clear roadmaps to trusted resources, we are working to ensure that no one feels alone in their mental health journey – especially the youth (and their caregivers) in our area.

Mind the Gap is our love letter to the greater Charlotte community. Welcome. We are so glad you are here.

Meet the Founding Inspiration

Phoebe Turner Azmi

Hey there. My name is Phoebe. My name means “bright” in Greek. It’s my best part and part of what I struggle with too.

I’ve struggled my whole life with feeling so so much. It’s gotten to heights where I have felt only and completely like a leaf flapping in the wind. Like I’m see-through. Like I don’t belong here.

But the amazing thing is that I do. And it’s been my greatest triumph coming back to life with the veracity and joy that I was born to have. I’m now happily married, recovered, in love, overcome with relief.

Mind the Gap started with us feeling like we were free-falling into insurance battles, new diagnoses and ground-shaking crises. But we came back from that stronger than ever, and far more attuned to the heart of what it is to be human.

Welcome to our safe space. We’re so glad you’re here. May my story become yours and may we all feel the bright relief that is community, resources, and connection.

Love you <3

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Mind the Gap celebrates you. Understandings of mental health are different for every person and every culture. We recognize the generations of successes and failures in the US and elsewhere to address mental health in a healthy way. We want to forge a new path of mindfulness, inclusion, and advocacy, starting with representation and celebration as a form of vital health. Our different understandings of the human experience should be honored and our common humanity should stay at our core. That iterative and at times imperfect process is part of our mission.

We are dedicated to connecting our community with mental health practitioners who represent the wide range of identities in Charlotte, including:

  • Racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Gender identities and expressions
  • Sexual orientations
  • Cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Religious and spiritual beliefs
  • Abilities and disabilities
  • Socioeconomic experiences
  • Ages and generational perspectives

Our Name and Logo

“Mind the Gap” is more than a name—it’s a commitment to bridging the divide between mental health challenges and accessible support. Our name reflects our mission to guide young people and their communities to the resources they need, ensuring no one falls through the cracks.

Our logo symbolizes this vision:

  • The Light: A beacon highlighting next steps, making it easy to find help.
  • The Megaphone: Amplifying good resources, ensuring they’re known and accessible.
  • Yellow Road Lines: Symbolizing our “Roadmaps” that make it easier to find your way through the landscape of mental health resources.

Together, the name and branding elements inspire us to remember the “why” behind the work we do.
