Charlotte has incredible mental health resources, but navigating them is overwhelming for struggling families. Mind The Gap bridges that gap through curated resources, stigma-reducing programming, community organizing and authentic peer support. We’re building something unique: a trusted connector and navigator in our fragmented mental health landscape.
Mind the Gap is always looking for amazing talent to help sustain our mission: to connect youth and families with mental health resources and break down barriers to care in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. In addition to our many volunteer opportunities and community programs/events, we also offer opportunities to serve as a board member.
Mind the Gap board members provide important leadership, governance, and oversight of the nonprofit organization. Board members are responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of the organization and ensuring compliance and fiscal responsibility. Board members serve as key advisors to Mind the Gap’s Executive Director and program staff.
Mind the Gap is especially looking for individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences, particularly in mental health advocacy, youth development, healthcare consulting, social work, fundraising, and strategic planning. Though mental health crises affect every demographic equally, Mind the Gap recognizes the effects are different for everyone and seeks individuals with diverse insight and experience.
While day-to-day operations are led by Mind the Gap’s Executive Director and team, Mind the Gap has an active board who will fully engage in board and committee meetings as well as our community events throughout the year. Note that Board Member roles at Mind the Gap are unpaid, volunteer positions.
Mind the Gap’s board members serve a three-year term and can serve up to two consecutive terms (up to 6 years total) with an election to Chairman of the Board allowing a term beyond 6 years (up to 8 years).
The board is composed of up to 9 individuals including 5 officers who have added responsibilities: one chairman, a vice chair, a governance chair, a secretary, and a treasurer. Any board member is eligible to become an officer. The chair serves for two years. Each board member will also serve on a designated committee throughout their term.
The board may also have a board apprentice position, which provides a great learning opportunity for younger individuals looking to develop their nonprofit or board skills—especially those with lived experience in mental health recovery. Ideally this representation will come from our Youth Ambassador’s program, which is in development.
Anyone who is passionate about youth mental health, reducing stigma, and/or increasing access to care in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community is welcome to apply. We are looking for individuals with lived experience (although certainly not required), as well as those with professional skills in fundraising, communications, legal, finance, marketing/PR, business development/consulting, school counseling/social work, nonprofit, and community organizing. All applications will be reviewed by board officers using a rubric to ensure equity.
Time Commitment: Approximately 4-6 hours per month including meeting prep, attendance, and community engagement activities.
First Year Structure: Norty Turner, the Mind the Gap co-founder, will chair the Board of Directors during our first two years, providing experienced leadership as we establish governance rhythms and organizational infrastructure.
Leveraging your experience in the Mental Health space as well as your leadership would be invaluable. We would also personally benefit from having you as a thought partner as we navigate our way through these start up years.
We’re building something transformational for Charlotte’s young people and the broader mental health ecosystem. We are energized with each conversation we have had with parents and caregivers, resources and community members who are all so appreciative of the work we are doing and we think you will be too.
Please submit an application using the form below and send an email to info@mindthegapconnects.org with your resume and cover letter attached. A member of the team will reach out to you with next steps.
