Roots & Relationships Internship

We offer hands-on internships for individuals interested in supporting mental health initiatives across the greater Charlotte–Mecklenburg area. Interns play an active role in day-to-day operations, communications, research, and program support, while helping keep our website, database, and resources accurate and up to date.

At Mind the Gap, interns learn alongside a care-centered team ready to engage with the intern and support their community involvement and social justice-driven impact on the mental health community in Charlotte. Interns will explore four core areas of our work — Service Learning, Marketing & PR, Research & Data, and Nonprofit Administration — and choose a focus that aligns with their interests and goals.

Service Learning
  • Coordination and liaison support for community programming, listening sessions and Action Afternoons
  • Exploring multicultural and global majority perspectives on topics from psychology to spirituality to social change
  • Attending and representing Mind the Gap at various mental health community events
  • Weekly reflection practices that integrate journaling and personal wellness along with close mentorship
  • Studying Community Engagement and social change ethics and practice
  • Collaborating with other interns to co-create learning spaces and community impact that are rooted in mission values
  • Gathering statistics and research on mental health issues.
    Helping evaluate program effectiveness through surveys and data collection.
  • Attending board meetings to support research and data needed for strategic decisions.
  • Compiling reports on the organization’s impact.
    Researching best practices and new developments in mental health services.
  • Scheduling and joining “Meet the Executive Director” interviews for the website.
  • Finding examples of “Overcoming Setbacks” to share.
  • Managing emails, phone calls, and scheduling appointments.
  • Keeping an up to date calendar of events and community outreach efforts with partner organizations and other community organizers.
  • Organizing and maintaining documents, databases, and the Resource Hub.
  • Assisting with grant writing and funding applications.
  • Post meeting – follow-up coordination of action items.
  • Learning about nonprofit compliance, ethics, and operational best practices.
  • Attending events and programs to support real-time content creation, and help document community impact.
  • Supporting with marketing execution and planning—content creation across social and email that maintains mission and vision integrity

Internships are offered each spring, summer, and fall—with a time commitment of approximately 10 to 30 hours per week depending on mutual needs. It can be done remotely or in-person. This internship may be eligible for course credit, depending on program requirements. Please inquire for more details and support there.

Each term includes a capstone project, a curriculum built around our interns’ interests with regular check-ins and a supportive, collaborative environment to do the work we are passionate about.
